It has been an embarrassingly long time since I posted to this blog (or updated the website, for that matter). But I am doing both of those things now.
I’m overjoyed to announce that in February I took up the position of Senior Scientist in Digital Numismatics at the Institute for Numismatics and Monetary History at the University of Vienna. Now that I am officially a Digital Humanist, I really ought to keep this website up to date. I will be posting regular progress reports regarding my main project here, the digitization of the Numismatische Zentralkartei (the Numismatic Central Card File), our collection of 1.5 million index cards (!) containing coin information, primarily from auction catalogues. If I’m lucky, I still might be around by the time we are finished.
Work began in May, and so far we have successfully digitized a test run of coins (those of Otho, naturally). We are currently working on a web front-end so that people will be able to access the cards as we go. Watch this space for updates!
